Looking back at the Beginning of New Mexico Society On November 4 & 5, 1955, 14 R.T.'s from various parts of the state of New Mexico met in Albuquerque to lay the ground work of what is now known as the NMSRT. The name in the beginning was the New Mexico Society of X-Ray Technicians. Officers were elected, committees appointed, site and date arranged for the 1st convention and a tentative constitution adopted. The following April 1956 a 2 day convention was held in Albuquerque. Highlights of the business session were adopted of the State Constitution, which would be in accordance for National affiliation application for affiliation with the American Society of X-Ray Technicians. At the National Convention of the ASXT in Louisville, KY in 1956 New Mexico received its charter as an affiliate group. Glen Mottaz of Los Alamos Medical Center represented New Mexico in accepting this honor. According to a Newsletter in February 1957 it stated that NM affiliation Charter was one of the fastest ever processed after application was received by the ASXT, also NM was the only State Society banner displayed in the National Convention Assembly in Louisville KY in 1956. In 1956 the first president of the NMSXT according to the Newsletter was I.T. Coleman of Albuquerque, the society had 59 members, the newsletter "NEW-MEX RAYS" was published in Roswell, NM. In 1959 the name changed to "BEAM OF ENCHANTMENT" and was published in Carlsbad, NM. Dues paid in 1955-1956 were $2.50. In 1957 there was talk of Licensure and Unionization and dues were raised to $3.00. The first NMSXT Convention was held in Albuquerque in 1956, Roswell 1957, Carlsbad 1958, and Albuquerque 1959. Registration costs were $2.00. In 1959 there was 110 members of the Society and I found nothing to say dues had been raised above $3.00. One technologist I have worked with for 25 years became a R.T. in 1961 and was working here in Carlsbad for $1.25 perhour. Looking back dues were almost 3 times the hourly wage. This is what I have come up with in my research so far, if anyone in New Mexico has any information for me so that I may continue with our history please send it to me or e-mail any of the board of directors so many years from now the New Mexico Society members can look back and see how our society started.
