The Hall of Fame
(Las
Cruces, NM - April , 2008) The New Mexico Society of Radiologic
Technologist recently recognized Mrs. Joyce Ortego with the "Hall
of Fame" award for 2008.
The a award reflecting her long
and outstanding contributions to the profession of Radiologic
Technologic in New Mexico and the nations. Joyce's career
spanned approximately 10 years as a technologist in the Medical Center
in Houston, Texas; 20 years as a radiologic technology educator at the
University of Texas Health Science Center School of Allied Health
Sciences, more than 12 years as the Program Direct at Donna Ana
Community College Radiologic Technology Program, and served as Interim
Director of Sonography Program for a year and a half. She
was also one of the first CT technologist in the world, when , as a
young RT she was asked to to the the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN to be
trained in this new modality.
Joyce was twice named the Outstanding
Faculty Member at UT. In New Mexico she twice served on the NMSRT
Annual Conference Planning Committee and she served on the NMSRT Bylaws
Committee that extensively revised the bylaws. She also holds the
distinction of having served on the Advisory Committee for Merrill's
Atlas for 8 years.
In her 32 years as a radiologic
technology educator Joyce has been responsible for the training of
approximately 800 students, 193 of them from New Mexico. She was
very competent and set the bar high for her students. At the same
time she was very compassionate. Numerous students benefitted from
one-on-one tutoring so they could pass the ARRT Registry Exam.
Many sought out her advice and counsel for professional and personal
problems. Fellow educators found her to be an excellent mentor and
role model.
Joyce Ortego exemplifies a dedicated,
caring, professional example of our profession worthy of honor.
